A Debate consists of four main things. One of the important pillars debate stands upon is The Motion which is basically the sentence or statement the whole debate revolves around. The wording of it must be analysed, thought out of the box for, critically thought about and most important understood. You don't want to be making a whole speech and battlefield about something you don't understand.
