Debate Speeches- Proposition Team (By: Amenah Shahin)

A debate is made up of two sides; proposition and opposition- in short we call them Prop and Opp. Each side consists of four speeches and in the least; three speakers.

In the Proposition Team we have the following speeches that must be made:

1- The First Speech- made by the First Speaker: this person must define the motion properly, they define the burden they decided to carry and to what extend they agree with this motion and what it means. What they think of it as a house and what it means. The importance of the first speaker is very great seeing as they draw the borderline and the borders of the debate. Then after they have made their introduction about their speeches and the motion they bring up two main arguments in which it explains and clarifies why they agree with the motion. After they have done thus, they draw their speech to a conclusion.

2- The Second Speech- made by the Seconds Speaker: now this speech comes after the first speaker of the Opposition team has spoken (furthermore on the role of the opposition team later), now seeing as the opposition team first speaker must refute and critisise the first speaker of the proposition's arguments, and present two new arguments of their side; the second speaker of the proposition must refute these arguments presented by the other team and present another two arguments of their side.

3- The Third Speech- made by the Third Speaker: This speaker brings the reputation of speeches, they show the points of clash (the bullet points the sides have argued about), they repeat their teams arguments and shows in general why they should win the case and they repeat what the opposing team's arguments were and refutes them. The Third Speaker's job is the hardest.

4- The Fourth Speech (The Reply Speech)- made by the Fourth and Final Speaker: This little guy comes after the third speaker of the opposition and they compare the two worlds the teams have created. They show their special world and what they propose, then they show the second teams world and shows what they propose. I always think of the reply speaker as someone who holds two bubbles in their hands, on the right is their world inside that bubble and on their left is the opposition's bubble. They bring the whole debate to a closeز

My favorite sentence a reply speaker could say is 'I hate to burst your little bubble, but..' it gets me cracking up. The pun is so horrible that it is funny.

Oh the irony...

Ahem, anyway, that concludes what the Proposition team does.

Let's see what the Opposition team does.
